The Losses

Chasseur 8 Rennes

Accounts of Rennes construction site and date differ, some sources attribute a 1939 build date in Le Havre, others  state 1938 in Dunkerque, the launch date according to Wikipedia was the 27th January 1940, The hull construction also varies depending on source, one states a wooden hull build, though the type began with Chasseur 5 and  photographs of Chasseur 9 at Dunquerque though built in Le Havre,  show steel plates on the hull and deck, it's not until the 41 number series that wooden hulls on the FNFL Chasseurs are seen.

Chasseur 8 was seized by the  Royal Navy during Operation Grasp, and was  handed over to the Free French on the 3rd July 1940, She was lost to enemy bombing on the 13th July 1942.

Below is the only photo so far found which shows the correct Chasseur 8 , other sites show the earlier design Ch8 built in Nantes.

Much has been written about the loss of Chasseur 8 and it is not proposed to rewrite that history on these pages, rather to give access to the pages that already exist and give due credit to those dedicated people who have done so much sterling work

 Raymond Delannoy

As a footnote to this page, although it is mentioned on the page dedicated to him, Raymond requested permission to marry his English bride on Bastille Day 1942, a request which was initially denied. Later, permission was granted, and the wedding went ahead.

Raymond was rostered to be on board Chasseur 8 Rennes on the day she was sunk, but was on leave to attend his wedding . The day after the wedding the base received confirmation of the loss of Rennes.
